How to Set Up WhatsApp Notifications and Never Miss an Important Alert

In today's digital age, it's essential to stay on top of notifications from various sources to ensure you don't miss anything important. Notify.Events is a powerful notification platform that helps you receive alerts from various sources, such as monitoring and CI/CD tools, Smart Home platforms, eCommerce platforms, and other applications. With Notify.Events, you can receive notifications via email, SMS, Slack, Telegram, and more.

Even though the tool supports more than 50 notification channels, WhatsApp is not included in this list. This is due to the strict requirements for receiving notifications from the messenger itself. But the Green API helps to get around this problem.

Green API is a third-party service that grants you access to WhatsApp API in order to send WhatsApp messages. By combining Notify.Events with Green API, you can get your alerts delivered on WhatsApp in real time. Text messages, links, files and images are supported.

Since the integration is designed to send notifications to phone numbers other than the sender number connected to the Green API, you can subscribe your customers, colleagues, or family members to notifications and alerts. If you set sending to the original (your own) number, messages will still be delivered to WhatsApp, but without a pop-up / sound notification. WhatsApp will automatically mark such messages as read since the sender number and the recipient number are the same.

For example, you can set up Home Assistant WhatsApp notifications to your household, Zabbix WhatsApp alerts to your team members, or visit reminder notifications to your clients’ WhatsApp.

Setting up WhatsApp notifications

Step 1: Set up a Notify.Events account

To get started, you will need to set up a Notify.Events account. Go to the Notify.Events website, fill in your details and click on the "Sign up" button. Once you have created your account, you will be taken to the dashboard.

Step 2: Create a channel in Notify.Events

Now you need to create a new channel (=notification flow) in Notify.Events. To do this, click on the "Channels" tab and then click on the "Create" button. Enter the name of the channel, check the box next to Green API, configure the other parameters and click the “Save” button.

Step 3: Integrate Notify.Events with your application or service

Now that you have set up your channel in Notify.Events, you can integrate it with the source application or service. To do this, use the “Add Source” button, choose the tool from the list and follow the setup instructions. The connection is secure and doesn’t require your login information.

Step 4: Connect Notify.Events with Green API

Next, you need to connect Notify.Events with Green API. For this, use the  “Subscribe” button, select Green API, enter the number you want to send notifications to or select a WhatsApp contact/group from the list (will be active if you have allowed this action in the Green API integration settings) and click “Subscribe”. To add more numbers, repeat the previous steps.

But before you start connecting the Green API, check the following:

  • You have an active Green API account;
  • You have associated the Green API with WhatsApp;
  • You have pre-configured the Green API integration and enabled subscription in the properties of the Notify.Events channel.

Step 5: Start getting notifications

Once everything is configured, you should start receiving notifications on the connected WhatsApp account(-s).

  • Invalid API key: Make sure you have entered your Green API key correctly.
  • Incorrect phone number: Double-check that you have entered the correct phone number connected to WhatsApp.
